In What We Hear When the Birds Sing, Terry Tempest Williams explores the intersection of sound and meaning, investigating the role of birdsong in our lives and the ways in which it shapes our understanding of the natural world.

Williams begins her journey by listening to the songs of the birds in her own backyard. She writes about the different ways that birds use sound to communicate, from territorial defense to attracting mates. She also explores the ways in which birdsong can affect our own emotions, from calming us down to inspiring us.

As she delves deeper into her subject, Williams travels to different parts of the world to listen to the songs of different bird species. She visits the rainforests of Costa Rica, where she hears the calls of macaws and parrots. She travels to the tundra of Alaska, where she listens to the haunting cries of loons and sandhill cranes. And she journeys to the deserts of the American Southwest, where she hears the songs of mockingbirds and coyotes.

Through her travels, Williams comes to realize that birdsong is not just a form of communication, but also a form of art. She writes about the beauty and complexity of birdsong, and she argues that it is a valuable part of our natural heritage.

What We Hear When the Birds Sing is a lyrical and moving meditation on the power of birdsong. Williams's writing is rich and evocative, and she brings the reader into the sonic landscape of the bird world in a way that is both intimate and awe-inspiring.
